SUMATRA : GAYO
Sumatra: a textbook classic that is worth its weight in gold. This coffee shows up and delivers - every time. We love that this lot carries the characteristic earthiness and warmth Sumatra has become known and loved for, while also bringing in some notes of cedar and oak, with brulee sugar to finish it off. We hope you enjoy this coffee as much as we do.
All of the coffee in Indonesia (and by extension, Sumatra) is owed to a guy named Hendrik who brought coffee plant cuttings in 1699. He first brought them to Java, which is why coffee was often known by that name for the last couple of hundred years.
Nearly all coffee in Sumatra is grown by smallholders coffee farmers, who can often have trouble connecting with reputable import companies and specialty roasters. By sourcing this coffee, we are able to partner with small scale farmers who are still consistently producing top lots. Virtually all Sumatran coffee is wet hulled due to the high humidity and rainy environment. This processing method is known as giling basah, and is what gives Sumatran coffee its characteristic earthiness as opposed to the chocolatey body we are often familiar with.
